Geo-fencing uses the global positioning system (GPS) in mobile devices to track its positioning in reference to defined geographical boundaries. Using this virtual barrier, you can track your workforce and provide real-time notifications as users enter or exit the geographical boundaries you've defined.

Access Site Geo-Fencing
Geo-Fencing can be activated by site. Each site can contain several different geo-fences. Geo-fences can be set as allowed or restricted areas.
- Click on the "Sites (Client)" tile from the live dashboard. Locate the site in the site list and click on the name of the site or the [View] button to access the site profile.
- Select the "Security & Patrol" tab.
- From the "Patrol Menu" select the "Geo-Fencing" option.
Geo-Fence Creating and Editing Tools
At the bottom of the Geo-Fence map there are two icons. These can be used for navigating the map and creating geo-fences.
- Hand Icon: Use this icon to navigate the map. Click to grab a position on the map and drag the map to navigate to the desired area.
- Polygon Icon: Click on the Polygon icon to create a geo-fence. Once this icon is clicked, the mouse will act as a shape-drawing tool. Click on specific locations of the map to create points that will act as intersections for the lines of the desired shape.
Create a New Geo-Fence
To create a new geo-fence, begin by selecting the Polygon icon noted in the previous step. This will allow the mouse to drop points on the map that will be used to draw the shape of the geo-fence. After selecting the polygon icon, complete the steps below to create a new geo-fence.
- Click to create the starting point for the geo-fence shape.
- Add additional points as needed to create the desired shape for the geo-fence.
- After creating the last unique point, click on the original starting point (In step #1). This will close the shape and prompt the pop-up window shown above.
- In the pop-up window, provide a name for this geo-fenced area.
- Click on the [OK] button to create the new geo-fence.
Assign the Geo-Fence as an Allowed or Restricted Area
Geo-fences can be assigned as "Allowed" or "Restricted" areas. To change the assignment of a geo-fenced area, click on the shape in the map. Once the area is selected, use the icons at that bottom of the map to select whether a geo-fenced area is "Allowed" or "Restricted."
Note that Restricted areas will always appear in red, whereas Allowed areas will appear in green on the map.
Edit the Name and Details of a Geo-Fence
Existing geo-fence zones can be edited or deleted at any time. Each of the rows under the "Zones" tab represents one of the geo-fence zones for the site. Follow the steps below to edit the information for a geo-fence zone.
- Click on the [Edit] button for the desired geo-fence.
- Modify this field to change the name or description of the geo-fence zone.
- Use the drop-down menu to select whether the geo-fence zone is an Allowed or Restricted area.
- If a geo-fence zone is no longer required, click on the checkbox to delete the zone.
- Click on the [Save] button to save any modifications to the geo-fence zone. If a zone was deleted, simply refresh the page to update the view on the map.
Edit the Shape or Location of a Shape
Once a geo-fence zone is created the shape and location of the shape can be edited as needed.
- Move Entire Polygon: Click and hold to drag and drop the entire shape to a different location on the map. Release the mouse button when the shape has reached the desired location. This will set the geo-fence zone to the new location.
- Change The Shape: Click on the points (line intersections) of the shape to change the shape. Drag and drop the point to the desired location to modify the shape of the geo-fence zone.
- Undo Changes: This button will appear when the geo-fence has been modified. Click on the [Undo] button to revert the changes made to the location or shape of the geo-fence zone.
Set Triggers for Geo-Fence Notifications
Configuring the geo-fence triggers makes it possible to customize how the geo-fence notifications will be handled by the system. Since this can be configured by site, each site can use triggers differently. For example, at certain sites notifications may only be required when an officers enters a Restricted zone, while other sites it may be more critical to ensure that the officer remains in an Allowed zone. An explanation of the trigger configuration options is shown below.
Min. GPS Accuracy: Set the minimum accuracy for a GPS signal. The notifications will only be triggered if the accuracy of the GPS signal is within the accuracy parameter set here. This is used to minimize the number of false notifications due to fluctuating accuracy of GPS signals.
Outside of Zone Detection: This trigger will sense when the officer's current location is not in one of the defined geo-fence zones.
Create System Exception: Upon triggering a notification, the system can also log an exception ticket. This will display in the "System Exceptions" tab in the Live Dashboard, similar to a "Disabled GPS" exception.
Entering a Zone (Restricted or Allowed): Use the drop-down menu to select either "Send Notification" or "Do Not Alert." If "Send Notification" is selected, a notification will be triggered every time an officer enters a zone. Note that this option is listed in the section for Restricted zones as well as Allowed zones.
Exiting a Zone (Restricted or Allowed): This works the same as the "Entering a Zone" option explained above. The difference is that this option will trigger a notification when the officer exits a zone.
Reminder Frequency (in minutes): The Reminder Frequency will trigger notifications based on the frequency set here. While the two options above trigger on the event that an officer enters/exits a zone, this option will continue to send notifications based on the event options select. For example, a notification can be configured for an officer entering a restricted zone, but the officer could remain in that zone for a period of time. The Reminder Frequency can be configured to send notifications every few minutes until the officer exits a restricted zone.
Configure Recipients of Geo-Fence Notifications
Follow the steps below to configure notifications for geo-fencing.
- Click on the "Notifications" tab.
- From the drop-down menu, select "Create Custom Notification Rules."
- Use the drop-down menu to select the type of notification. Notifications can be sent via email or SMS.
- After selecting the method for the notification, add the email address or mobile phone number in this text box.
- Click on the [+ Add More] link button to add additional contacts to the notification.
- Click on the [Save Notification Settings] button to save the notification rules.
Audit Geo-Fence Breaches in Events
The "Events" tab shows records for every time an officer entered or exited a geo-fence zone. The records in this tab are event-driven, meaning they only show changes in the officers status in relation to a geo-fence zone.
Audit GPS Pings in Relation to Geo-Fences
The "Logs" tab displays records of every GPS ping in relation to the geo-fence zone. This is different from events as it will display each GPS ping regardless whether the officer moves from one zone to another.
